Dawn Calling

A 5 track jazz-funk ep (32m 56s) — released December 4th 2020 on Nothin Personal

'Fly Low' - The EP begins in a cinematic, textural soundscape with a spiritual jazz introduction crashing over the top. This dynamic introduction to the band gives way to a broken beat groove which seemingly teeters on the edge of falling over itself before morphing once again into a thumping, hypnotic groove driven by the kick drum, percussion and bass.

'Dawn Calling' - Taking cues from the likes of Brazilian pioneers Gilberto Gil, Gal Costa and Joao Donato , the title track features driving percussion, enchanting group vocals, longing sax and and impressive solos from everyone in the band. Each listen reveals another aspect to this track.

'Voyager' - Fingerpicked bass weaving around an Afro-Cuban 'Son' clave pattern. Kit, shaker, cowbell, congas and more all oscillating between two different time signatures while being grounded by the claps throughout. The result is a driving, percussivejourney which balances all these different elements perfectly. A beautiful sax and piano duet halfway through which gives rise to the more electronic elements of EP, peaking with an impressive drum solo.

'Pachinko King Ft. ML Hall' - ML Hall's silky vocals are the perfect match for this buttery bass line. Warm, warbly keys, a stripped back drum performance and ethereal synths contrast against the hard hitting chorus, reminiscent of the crate digging, beat flipping, sample heavy hip-hop culture of the 80's. Hall's raps in the chorus' are as impressive lyrically as they are agile.

'After Hours' - Closing out the release is a frantic jazz-house number. Disorienting, dangerous and energetic, driven by a heavy swinging ride cymbal and thumping bass line, the groove doesn't let up for the entirety of the song. The band rises to the occasion here, unrelenting drums, a desperate sax solo and tasteful piano solo work together to create a memorable end to the EP.
